There are just nine days of jumps racing staged at Cartmel every summer, and the meetings often attract large crowds of race-goers, with attendances topping 20,000 on some days. The course is a popular destination with holiday makers who have ventured to the Lake District, and patrons often arrive early and stay late, taking time to enjoy the large fairground and other attractions that take place alongside the racing itself. The most valuable race held at Cartmel is the Cumbria Crystal Handicap Hurdle, worth around £25,000, and some powerful southern trainers including the likes of Jonjo O’Neill and Dan Skelton often have runners at the track.
Left handed, tight. Only six fences to a circuit means little emphasis on jumping and, whilst the last few come in quick succession and can result in mistakes, the attrition rate is one of the lowest in the country. Run-in of half a mile from the last fence is the longest in the country and, unsurprisingly, the lead changes hands from the last more than would normally be expected, be it due to horses idling or tiring after being sent for home too soon.
