Thurles is the only family-owned racecourse in Ireland and has been in the Molony family since the early 1900’s. Thurles racecourse was never purpose-built, but has developed and evolved over the years. Developments have been ongoing to improve facilities for its patrons and to make race days as enjoyable as possible. On the track, Kinloch Brae winners of 2016 Don Cossack and 2017 Sizing John have gone on to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup.
An undulating, right-handed track with a circuit of around a mile and a quarter. Sections of the track are uphill but there is a fairly steep descent to the 2f home straight and the track is very much sharp in character, favouring the handy type of horse. There are seven fences to a circuit of the chase course, with two in the home straight, and a run-in of around a furlong. Perhaps surprisingly, the chase course claims the highest proportion of casualties in Ireland, with the last 2 fences particularly tricky. Due to good drainage, very few meetings are lost due to adverse weather conditions.
Thurles is a right-handed, undulating track of a mile and two furlongs in length. There is a stiff climb on the latter half of the back straight before it descends noticeably on the turn in to the two-furlong straight. The track drains remarkably well and very testing ground is a rarity.
