Mechanism and rationale
Chases of three and a half miles or more are thought to need an old, hardened horse, so the young ones are let go at bigger prices than they deserve. Aged seven or under they have won more often than their prices implied in every period since 2020; older horses in the same races have not.
The rule
race_type = 'Chase' AND is_handicap = 1 AND age <= 7 AND distance_yards >= 6160
Reads: race_type, is_handicap, age, distance_yards

Falsification
No attacks yet. Only promising ideas are attacked.
Sealed holdout (vault)
Not queried. Only a frozen idea can spend its one query against the 2020-25 holdout.
Forward record
No forward record. Shadow tracking starts after the vault and counts only races run after the freeze.

{ "reflection": "H175 began as a NEGATIVE idea: young horses (7 or under) in chases of 3m4f or more would be over-bet because the market assumes an improver will stay. The numbers came out the other way. Discovery gave A/E 1.128 on 289 bets, and the broad import gave A/E 1.16 on 618 (BSP ROI +10.1%). The handicap subset was GREEN at 1.181 on 584 and is now live as SYS-young-stayer-marathon-handicap-chase. By LEARNINGS rule 10 this reversal is a discovery: the market seems to under-rate young horses at marathon trips, probably because the 'needs an old, hardened horse' idea is common knowledge and gets priced in too hard. Two warnings. First, the edge is fading by period (1.17, 1.21, then 1.05 on 125), so the latest period is barely above break-even. Second, the reversed mechanism has never been tested directly. We don't know whether the lift comes from youth itself, from being unexposed at the trip, from a dose-response with distance, or from something else that young marathon runners share, such as large-field festival handicaps or low weights. The live system needs a mechanism check before more forward bets are trusted.", "answers": [], "questions": [ { "question": "Is the young-stayer lift carried by horses that have not yet run at 3m4f+ (stepping up in trip), as the 'market doubts unproven stamina' mechanism requires?", "rationale": "If the reversed mechanism is right, the mispricing should sit with runners whose stamina is unknown, not with young horses already proven at the trip.
